After all that culture how about some shopping in Paris? Time to treat yourself or you family at home to something nice and even if you end up buying nothing then window shopping in Paris is a great way to spend an afternoon. Some shopfront displays are an art form in themselves. There is a lot to choose from and it need not be outrageously expensive so let’s take a look at what Paris shopping is out there.
Department Stores
The best known of these are Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, both in Boulevard Hausmann on the Right Bank. The first, at number 40, has all the departments you could wish for catering for women’s and men’s fashion, cosmetics, home furnishings, at least half a dozen restaurants and a guided heritage tour if you so wish. Check out the gigantic Art Nouveau glass dome built in 1912.
Printemps which means Springtime is at number 64 and offers lifestyle, fashion and accessories. It too has its own glass cupola dome for you to be enthralled with, situated above the main restaurant.
On the Left Bank at 24 Rue de Sevres you have Le Bon Marché (the Good Deal), the oldest Parisienne department store in the middle of a great shopping area and was founded in 1838 with four sections and a staff of 12. After 1852 with the arrival of a new partner M. Boucicaut they introduced the concept of fixed prices for goods in the store, instead of the customer haggling at the checkout till.
Food & drink shopping
A hub for gourmet food and drink shops is Place de la Madeleine and a notable in this area is retailer Fauchon at number 11 offering wine, cheese, pastries and other goodies; Google the brand to find its other Parisienne outlets. Keep an eye out on your travels throughout the city for the astonishingly high standard of decorated cakes and buns in the windows of the many bakers’ shops you’ll stroll by – some of their products look too good to eat!
This nicely brings us onto the subject of chocolate. In Ireland we think we’re fairly knowledgeable on the subject but to move up to the next step check out:

Designer Stores
Known as the Triangle d’Or (the golden triangle) bounded by the Champs Elysées, Avenue George V and Avenue Montaigne it’s in this area you will find Bonpoint, Bulgari, Celine, Chanel, Christian Dior, Dolce e Gabbana, Ynes de la Fressange, Donna Karan, Ferragamo, Gucci, Joseph, Calvin Klein, Krizia, Christian LaCroix, Loewe, Max Mara, Prada, Pucci, Nina Ricci, Jean Louis Scherrer, Ungaro, Valentino, Louis Vuitton and possibly a few in addition. For more of the same try Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré; we won’t say ‘shop til you drop’ as you’ll probably run out of funds first.
Flea markets/ Street markets
On Sat/ Sun/ Mon browse the multitude of markets that make up the Puces de St Ouen at Clignancourt; you can pick up as many bargains and as much junk as you wish at some 2,000 stalls that make up the sprawling shoppers’ paradise. Metro: Vanves. ©ArrowTours
