Top Things to do in Paris

What are the top things to do in Paris during your citybreak? Well you could spend a month here and still not see all the City of Lights has to offer so here is a selection of your top things to do in Paris to make the most of your visit.

Unique Tourist Landmarks

The Eiffel Tower is located in Champ de Mars and was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Said to be the most visited paid attraction in the world it is the main symbol of Paris and is also one of the most romantic places in the world to receive your marriage proposal.

The Arc de Triomphe at the western end of the Champs Elysées was built in 1806 to honour fallen soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars and the French Revolution with the tomb of the unknown soldier is at its base. Its magnificent vistas from the viewing point at the top of the 284-step climb inside this monument is worth it.

Père Lachaise Cemetery though it sounds grim a visit here makes for a very interesting experience. It is gigantic but you can get a map to help you round it, it is quirky – you will never have seen anything like it before and you can visit the graves of Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Chopin and Edith Piaf along with many more.

Paris Sewers – it sounds disgusting but is in fact is clean and makes for a very informative and entertaining way to learn about how Paris keeps its streets clean by giving them a bath every afternoon!

Notre Dame Cathedral, the main cathedral of Paris, suffered a catastrophic fire in April 2019 causing extensive damage. It is due to re-open in 2024 and will still retain its superb Gothic façade and the famous gigantic stained glass rose window. The church is located on the Ile de la Cité island in the middle of the Seine.

The Pantheon was built as a Church in the Latin quarter and is dedicated to Saint Genevieve, the patron Saint of Paris, to house the vessel that contains her relics. The Pantheon has had many changes to it during the years and it is now a Mausoleum where distinguished French residents are laid to rest such as Voltaire, Rousseau and the author of Les Misérables, Victor Hugo.

Sacre Coeur Basilica is on the summit of Montemarte in northern Paris and is a magnificent white building with the largest ceiling mosaic in France. You can access the Dome where you can see panoramic views of Paris and it also has a crypt.

For a day-trip try the Versailles Palace and Gardens which were built during the reign of Louis XIII and Louis XIV in the 1600’s. With live daily fountain shows and tours of the interior of the Palace that let you enter otherwise closed rooms, the magnificence and splendour of Versailles Palace and gardens are a wonderous spectacle not to be missed.

Museums & Art Galleries

The Louvre Museum, previously the royal residence to many Kings, now hosts over 360,000 art objects including Leonardo da Vinci’s famous ‘Mona Lisa’ and the ‘Venus de Milo’ statue credited to Alexandros of Antioch as well as The Winged Victory of Samothrace sculpture.

Le Musee d’Orsay was originally built as a train station, Gare d’Orsay in 1900. Today it is a wonderful art gallery holding a host of Impressionist masterpieces by Renoir, Manet, Cézanne, Van Gogh and friends.

Entertainment & Cabarets

Le Moulin Rouge is the most famous cabaret show in the world, more recently made even more known by the movie of the same name starring Nicole Kidman. Based on Puccini’s La Boheme, and the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, the flamboyant red building is one of the more notable landmarks in Paris. Enjoy an evening dinner followed by a cabaret dance show celebrating the female form – in other words the ladies on stage are topless.

Paradis Latin is the oldest cabaret show in Paris and the building itself is steeped in history. Come along and enjoy the singing, music and dancing girls (again, many topless). You can book it as show-only or also include dinner with it beforehand. ©ArrowTours
