Best Areas to Stay in Paris

There are a few districts considered the best areas to stay in Paris though the French call then arrondissements. They are numbered 1-20 and radiate outwards in a clockwise spiral from Paris centre. The best areas to stay in Paris can depend on what you are looking for from your holiday….it could be a luxury hotel in which to pamper yourself…….or maybe good nitelife……to be close to museums and historic monuments…… or just good shopping. You can find all these in many arrondissements or areas in Paris.

While Dublin has its North and South sides, Paris has its Left and Right Banks. The Left bank contains areas 5,6,7,13,14, and 15 while the main areas on the Right bank are 1,2,3,4, 8,9,10,11 and 12.

8th and 9th Arrondissements – Some of the best areas to stay in Paris
The 8th Arrondissement contains the bucket list sights of the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde and then you have the shopper’s paradise of the Golden Triangle of world-renowned designer stores and a plethora of top-end cafés where you can while away the hours watching life take place.

The 9th Arrondissement runs north from the famous Paris Opera House Palais Garnier up to the foot of Montmartre.  It is home to the famous department stores Galeries Lafayette and Printemps which are in the shopping paradise of Boulevard Hausmann, so if it’s shopping you are after this is your area.  District 9 is the arrondissement with the largest number of hotels so it is very tourist oriented. There are plenty of small restaurants and brasseries also.

1st and 2nd Arrondissements
The 1st and 2nd districts are recommended as the best areas to stay in Paris for a first-time visitor. These are the city’s most central districts and the ones which contain most of what attracts the tourists. You’ll be within walking distance of many historic sights, museums (Louvre), boat cruises and river life and plenty of restaurants and for shopping you have the famous ‘Covered Passages’ or arcades such as Passages de Panoramas at 11 Boulevard de Montmartre or Passage Chioseul at 23 Rue saint Augustin.

5th and 6th Arrondissement
Located on the Left Bank of the Seine opposite Notre Dame Cathedral the 5th/6th districts are some of the oldest and most cosmopolitan districts of Paris. They are in the Latin Quarter which got its name from the fact that the oldest universities of Paris, including the Sorbonne, are situated here and in days gone by Latin was the language used in these institutions. This area is well known for its jazz clubs, theatres, nightclubs and bars/cafes. Paris’s 5th arrondissement is home to numerous sites and monuments that bear witness to the city’s history. On the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève stands the monumental Pantheon, the ‘temple of the nation’, where France’s illustrious figures are buried. If you’re visiting in November or December you can check out the largest Christmas Market in the city on the Boulevard Saint Germain. ©ArrowTours
