Rome Package Holidays

Rome wasn’t built in a day but your Rome package holiday can be pulled together in minutes here on our website. With a number of flights daily from Ireland, Rome package holidays become very accessible for you and your partner and we can give you a hand with it if you require.

Today we’re visiting several ancient ruins so get the Line B Metro to Colosseo and ascend to street level. You’re now at the Colosseum, probably the single most recognizable icon of the city. It was built by Emperor Vespasian between 72-80 AD and in its day could hold up to 50,000 gore-rabid spectators. The opening ceremony lasted 100 days and during its 450 year use, it staged gladiatorial contests between war prisoners, slaves and professional fighters as well as man-beast contests featuring bouts with wild animals shipped in from the four corners of the Empire and also beast-on-beast contests. Historians are fairly sure that Christians were not fed to lions here as the venue was completed only after the reign of Nero, the main persecutor of Christians. The network of subterranean tunnels and alleys is visible today, showing routes of how people and animals made their way into the arena (this word is pure Latin and means ‘sand’ which is how the surface of the flooring was covered).

Exiting the Colosseum head northwest and you’re now at the Forum Romanum, a collection of ruins that represent what was once the centre of the civilized world. In here there are arches, columns and temples and they form the bustle and commerce that was central Rome 2,500 years ago. Over time it fell into disuse and ruin and much of the blockwork of original buildings was carted away over the centuries as building stone for other Roman constructions. The whole site is now preserved and there are permanent excavations ongoing to uncover more of the city’s history.

After doing a lap of the Forum head south for a couple of minutes and you’re at the Circus Maximus – the ancient oval race track. Here were staged chariot races, horse races, athletic events, plays & recitals and the occasional gladiator fight or public execution. It started off about 300 BC as a fairly humble affair, then became a wooden structure and over time was reconstructed in stone; in its heyday it could hold up to 150,000 eager spectators all betting on the outcome of the next spectacle. Prospective politicians used to sponsor events in order to gain favour and votes from the electorate.

From here, after lunch head southeast to the Pontifical Irish College in Via del Santi Quattro, known simply as the Irish College. It was started in 1625 as a seminary to train Irish priests and now does so for clerical students worldwide. The chapel in the college serves as the place of marriage for about 250 Irish couples annually and if you’re thinking of having it done for you on this Rome package holiday it’s worth confirming in advance, not least with your travelling partner and especially if you’re not even engaged yet…. ©ArrowTours
