Always popular with Irish tourists to Rome are hotels near Trevi Fountain because this is a major attraction. The Trevi Fountain was built by the Italian architect Nicola Salvi between 1732 and 1762 and the name Trevi comes from the ‘tre vie’ or three roads which signifies the intersection of exactly that and was also the terminus of Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied Ancient Rome back in the day. The attraction has undergone several renovations and restorations over the centuries and remains one of the most popular focal points within Rome. The convention is that if you toss a coin over your left shoulder then you will return one day to the Eternal City. Fishing other people’s coins out of the fountain is illegal and the 3,000 euros daily tossed in by visitors is used by the authorities to fund a municipal supermarket to support the less well off.
Because you’re choosing this area you will also be close to the Spanish Steps, which are about 750m north of the famous fountain or a ten-minute walk. The Spanish Steps are also a popular gathering point for tourists and at the bottom of them is a museum to the romantic poets John Keats and Percy Shelley.
