It’s worth bearing in mind always that there is no internationally recognized standard for star ratings so 5 star hotels in Rome may vary slightly in features. The kinds of things you might expect include multilingual staff, 24-hour reception/ doorman/ room service/ parking, medical team on call, fine dining restaurant, standalone lounge or bar, childcare options including babysitter, out-of-view luggage storage. For the rooms you could have digital key entry, wifi, outlets for your electronic equipment such as USB plugs, smart tv features, electric safe. Some 5 star hotels in Rome are so enticing you may be tempted to spend your whole trip pampering yourself indoors and leaving the sights and attractions to another time, which we guess means leaving the hotel at least once to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain!

Locarno Hotel – 22 Via della Penna Rome 00186; the hotel is in the northern part of the city and is midway between the River Tiber and the Piazza del Popolo so it is about 900m or a ten minute walk from the Spanish Steps. The hotel was opened in 1925 and is named after the hometown of the original Swiss owners. The decor and style of the rooms is classic even though all the fittings are new and the floors are all wooden parquet. After you’ve pummelled the horse in the gym you can sip a drink at the Cocktail bar or enjoy lunch on Terazza Locarno. Rocco Forte Hotel del la Ville – 69 Via Sistina Rome 00187; this property is ideally located being right beside the Spanish Steps and just a couple of minutes’ walk from the designer shopping streets of Via dei Condotti, Via Borgognona and Via Frattina as well as being close to the Trevi Fountain.
