Amsterdam Holidays

It’s now time for your Amsterdam holidays! And now that you’ve touched down in Schiphol Airport your Amsterdam holidays just begun. There are several flights daily from Cork and Dublin so there’s bound to be one that suits you and your partner. This is a city that has such a varied offering that there’s something to please everyone. The place is compact but also has a very efficient public transport system so your Amsterdam holidays are going to be very accessible while you’re here.

There are several distinct areas within the city, all on the southern side of the main train station, Central Station, which you will pass through when you arrive. The centre of Amsterdam contains the world-famous Anne Frank house where you can learn the heart-breaking story of the young teenager who hid here for two years along with her family to escape the persecution of the invading Nazis. Unfortunately she did not survive World War 2 but the diary of her experiences did and its subsequent publication became a global bestseller. Today the house is a museum and stands as a reminder to all of the importance for inclusion and tolerance. Amsterdam holidays would not be complete without a visit to the world famous Red Light District. Here you can see the girls tout for trade from the shop windows in their completely legal profession. The signs you may see saying ‘Kamer te huur’ in this area means ‘Rooms to hire’. If your partner won’t allow you to partake then perhaps they will settle for sharing a locally-brewed Heineken beer in one of the many cafés and pubs that abound the city.

If art is your strong point then check out the Museum Quarter in the southern part of the city where you have not one but three venues all close to each other to visit:

– The Rijksmuseum containing a treasure trove of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age including works by Rembrandt, Jan Vermeer and Frans Hals.

– Van Gogh Museum with pieces by the troubled artist you’ll recognize immediately

– The Stedelijk Museum exhibiting busloads of modern stuff

You can buy posters of all your favourite bits in the gift shops in each gallery.

In the eastern part of the city you can visit the Gassan Diamonds and learn the fascinating story of how these stones are mined, cut, polished and mounted. You can buy a ring while you’re there and going down on one knee implore the love of your life you marry you before your girlfriend finds out. While in this part you can also visit Rembrandt’s house and see how he lived, worked and taught art students of the time. It’s then only a short trip to the famous Jewish Portuguese Synagogue that was built in the 17th century and is still in use today and then pop in to the close-by Jewish Historical Museum showing the contribution of the city’s Jewish community over the centuries and a displaying a sobering reminder of the Holocaust of World War 2.
